Union Jack really needs no introduction. It's as much a Winchester institution as anything else in town. From the looming facade of the former Union Bank to the striking — albeit distinctly foreign — red, white, and blue banners, this place is iconic as they come. More to the point, locals know that the near-endless selection of draft beers, alone, warrants an appreciative visit every now and then.. and again..
What you might not know, though, is that Union Jack now also has the biggest and best patio dining around — certainly in Old Town, and quite possibly anywhere!

In days of social distancing and phased access, the owners at Union Jack have taken it upon themselves to create an inviting, safe place for folks to get out, unwind, and to enjoy a pint or two al fresco. Patio seating now extends from in front of the restaurant all the way across the mall, and down Rouss Avenue between the Farmers & Merchants Bank building (now InnoVault) and the Old Courthouse lawn. If you walk by in the afternoon or evening, you're sure to see at least a few groups outside, under a colorful umbrella, washing away the summer heat with a cold drink.

And beneath the surface, there are even more exciting things coming. Chef Jim Thompson has been busy creating new, modern restaurant menu items to complement Union Jack's timeless pub feel. In the meantime, the food's still great — and pub favorites are among the best you'll find. We highly (like, really highly!) recommend the Buffalo chicken wings. They're thick, meaty, and hands down the juiciest and most satisfying wings you'll eat this month!

As with most things Winchester, however, the real hidden gems at Union Jack are the people in and behind it. The wait staff are knowledgeable, friendly, and prompt — but, of course, never too prompt to undermine a good time! The owners make rounds and mingle with the tables, giving the place an almost Cheers-like feel. And of course, the patrons are already your friends — and if not yet, then soon!

Summer's already too far spent, so don't miss the chance to spend what's left of it on the comfortable, shady patio at Union Jack!
